Prince Brings Welcome 2 America to the Garden--Final Show

Greetings Socialites,

Having just come up from the rabbit hole and feeling like Alice in Prince’s "wonderland", I relish in telling you about my trip with His Royal Highness himself on the Welcome 2 America Tour. I was afforded the opportunity attend and asked that I do so for The Quest for "it", so of course I jumped on the opportunity. 

From the moment I picked up my ticket at will call I was giddy with anticipation of seeing not Prince but Mr. "F You" himself Cee Lo Green.  Cee Lo who opened the concert was a consummate performer with his all girl band he commanded MSG on his own terms and took a few more prisoners into his style of fusion funk reminding me of the days where real music is to be appreciated and supported not downloaded.  Cee Lo not only performed his set he also covered Prince’s When You Were Mine from the Dirty Mind album (Yes!! I am a huge Prince fan). After getting the crowd warmed up Cee Lo exited and I mingled with some newfound media friends radio host Jean Parnell of HCR (Harlem Community Radio), Entertainment Publicist Cheryl Duncan, Don Thomas and others.

The "royal" Prince then came to the stage opening with 1999 then segueing into Lets Go Crazy and of course we did! Performing all of his hits from the Purple Rain album, he took us on a journey of his musician ship one of which I will never forget. I can't give you the full set rundown but he did perform When Doves Cry, Kiss, Insatiable, Adore, Nasty Girl, Sign of Times, Alphabet St, Controversy, Love Bizarre, Nothing Compares To You of which he dedicated to Bobby Z a former band member and Scandalous that’s just to name a few.

Cee Lo also returned to join Prince on stage for an impromptu set of his hit song ‘ Crazy “, dancer Misty Copeland performing to the hit Beautiful Ones. He also paid homage to Beyoncé with “Single Ladies calling SECURITY on one man who was dancing onstage, I swear the man literally froze thinking he was going to get swooped up by security but it was all in good fun, other highlights of the evening were a few celebrities who were asked to dance joined Prince on stage Celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz, The Roots' QuestLove, Kim Kardashian whom he threw off for not dancing and Chris Rock.  

Well now that I have let you in on the 411 on Prince please continue to inspire as well as support the arts*** and remember  “ Never step on anyone’s dreams, you may be standing in the way of your own destiny." God Bless!

***-Prince’s philanthropy towards the arts he is considerably very passionate about. So passionate before the scheduled show the man donated 1.5 million dollars on lines of credit where he can know the needs of the organizations and steadily remain involved with them those of  which are The Harlem Children’s Zone, Uptown Dance Academy and The American Ballet Theater.

Curt Smith's This is Christmas!

For those of us of a certain age (aka "old dudes"), the name "Tears For Fears" will always evoke fond, Golden-Days-of-MTV-type memories.  The British group, with their moody, art-rock sensibilities and sophisticated sonic textures,  forged an indelible sound that enabled them to stand out among the bumper crop of cookie-cutter 80's synth pop bands.  Who can forget the cathartically anthemic "Shout", the ethereal, shimmering guitars on "Everybody Want to Rule the World", the Beatles-informed "Sowing the Seeds of Love"?   So news that founding member Curt Smith is going to be releasing his first holiday tune this season came as joyful tidings indeed! 

 “This is Christmas” will be officially released to the public on Monday, November 29, 2010.   Smith is releasing “This is Christmas” through his KOOK Media label as a standalone single,  and it's going to be available digital format from iTunes, Amazon MP3, and other online retailers.  In addition, Smith is also planning to release the song as a signed, limited edition CD single, which will be sold only at concerts and through his Web site. 

As per the official press release,“This Is Christmas” tells the story “of an adult visiting his parents at Christmas and lamenting how he’s always made to feel like a child when he returns home. It culminates in his realization and acceptance that they’re family after all, and nothing will (or even should) change that.”  Fittingly, backing vocalists on the track include Smith’s daughters Diva and Wilder, along with Charlton Pettus (Smith’s longtime friend and collaborator) and his children Georgica and Harry, Jason Joseph, Simon Steadman, and a chorus comprised of local school children.

Look for "This is Christmas" to also be featured on the December 15th episode of USA Network's "Psych" series.

Remembering Steinbrenner

                    Hey There!

I am in my 39TH YEAR and I have been a NY Yankees fan for 33 of them, and anticipating to be a fan for a lot more.  I have been fortunate to have been born a Yankee's fan, and I am fortunate to have been born a Yankee's fan during the lifetime of  George Steinbrenner III  and Bob Sheppard. This past week has seen the fall of  these two NY Yankee icons. Affectionately known as "The Boss," and Bob Sheppard the "Voice of God"  and the "Voice of Yankee Stadium," I never personally had the good fortune to meet either man, yet I still had a relationship with both. 

From the first moment I heard "Welcome to Yankee Stadium" 31 years ago I knew it was gonna be a special relationship.  Bob Sheppard just exuded class and commanded respect by the way he spoke over the Yankee Stadium PA system. Even players, baseball giants, who will be going to the Hall of Fame, and ones that are already in the Hall of Fame were reduced to wide-eyed appreciative spectators when they heard their names announced. I am very happy and fortunate to have been a NY Yankee fan during his tenure,and to have been able to experience his legend.  George Stienbrenner ...well, what can you say. 

Every fan wants their team to win all the time, and Mr. Steinbrenner basically made that happen through his navigation in his quest for "'it".  He brought us 7 World Series Titles and 11 American league pennants in 37 years.  Generations have come and gone without ever seeing one world title from their team.  So all I can say simply and humbly is, thank you gentlemen, thank you so much for giving us so much during your quests.

Sponsors--They're Not Just For Rehab Anymore!

                               Hi!

Rising R&B sensation Teairra Mari is stirring up quite the controversy with her latest hit,  "Sponsor".   The Detroit songstress has been blessed with some Beyonce-fierce beauty to complement her worthy vocal skills,  though that's sometimes  hard to tell beneath the thick layer of Auto-Tune.   What she's also got now is a bit of good old-fashioned drama on her hands!   BET networks had originally banned the Gucci Mane/Soulja Boy guested video from its airwaves,  for promoting a negative (as in gold-digging) message to young women.  Now, according to S2S Magazine, the network has responded to accusations of imposing an obvious double-standard in their screening process, and has lifted the ban. 

 As far as the song itself is concerned, we're not really sure what all the fuss is about. Gold-digging anthems have been around for some time now, and given all the other less-than-savory "messages" that the network eagerly promotes, singling out this one video for censure does seem a tad ridiculous.   In any event,  it now appears likely that this track is destined for plenty of play on BET's  popular "106 & Park" show,  thereby helping to insure that this  Jay-Z discovered talent will be blowin' up in Twenty-Ten!

Weighing In on Jessica Simpson's 'No Makeup' Marie Claire Cover

There's no question that Jessica Simpson is gorgeous - with or without makeup.  But in the wake of her "naked" Marie Claire cover, rumors are swirling that the blond bombshell is not as au natural in the photos as she claims.  

In an effort to promote "real" beauty, in support of her new Vh1 show, "The Price of Beauty", Jess agreed to shoot this month's cover of Marie Claire magazine sans makeup and airbrushing.  While she does look much less made-up than usual, there are some hints of eye makeup and possible lip color in the shots.  But does it really matter?

With the work she's doing traveling the globe uncovering the beauty secrets   of women all around the world, Jess is raising awareness for women everywhere who suffer with insecurities about their looks.  The singer has been scrutinized for years over her weight, her fashion, her relationships, her hair, and even her nose (which she admits to have broken a few times).

So, once again, everyone is asking the same question: is she, or isn't she?  Despite the speculation, Jess glows with inner confidence.  I guess we'll never know if she's wearing mascara or not, but one thing is for sure, this girl has never looked better.

App-etite for an iPad?

                               Hi there!

OK.  all you high-tech mobile fashion/arts/media types--the day you've been pining for has finally arrived!  Yep,  that's correct, peoples--it's launch day for the  iPad!   We probably haven't seen a tablet get this much attention since Mt. Sinai,  but Apple's latest product, an exquisitely designed touch-screen slate, will probably live up to the unprecedented hype.   The stylish device, which is in essence sort of a mash-up of an iPhone and a laptop,  will be hitting Apple stores across the nation today.  Techno-pundits have already weighed in ad-nauseum  with both hate and love for the iPad,   but we personally are going to hold off on making any rash judgements,  until we can actually kick the tires, er... screen,  ourselves.  So if you're feeling a bit lonely in the big city on this Saturday, and longing for a little bustle and excitement, why not head down to your nearest Apple store, and give it a check?  Hey, with the seductive promise of an app to satisfy your every whim (we personally can't wait to give the MIXR multi-touch DJ app a whirl!), who could possibly resist?  For further info on the iPad, and to shop online, just Click here.

Domenico Vacca Fall 2010

The perfect balance of practicality and designer chic was achieved at the Domenico Vacca Fall 2010 presentation.  From a collection of separates worthy of any avant garde fashionista to a simple classic dress with superb tailoring this Vacca's Fall 2010 is looking great. Designer Domenico Vacca's great Italian craftsmanship is not a surprise, but with the combination of superior fabrics and master tailoring it was clearly identifiable on Friday February 12.  The presentation took place in the perfect setting--the Peter Tunney Gallery. The seemingly eerie address of "666" fifth avenue was muted by surrounding art work.  The pop art working studio/gallery hosts very creative pieces which include interesting lettering/typography prints.  An eye-catching piece in the collection was a tuxedo-style black sequin shawl collared Jacket which offered zipper pockets. At a perfect length, it can be worn as a stand alone piece for a night on the town or as a nice jacket over a simple dress. In addition, a cropped bolero style double breasted jacket which creatively combines herringbone tweed with charcoal gray leather made for a perfect piece for accenting a day look.  Also a standout, a nice shift dress with an over-sized collar and a very distinctive lace-up detail on the shoulder always the look to achieve a desired formality but edge as well. The herringbone tweed offers a unique shimmer threading  that makes it perfect to transition into evening.  Although separates in the collection can be worn as complete ensembles,there were some great stand alone pieces. The palette presents flexible fall neutrals of charcoal grey, tans and rich dark browns.

A range on metallic influences--silver sequins and a micro pleat sweater with silver metallic undertones are present. Vacca's innovative approach towards modernism can be seen in practical elements such as detachable collars and conversion details such as zip off sleeves allowing to switch from 3/4 to full sleeve. With embedded detail like this; is no wonder he became a favorite with Hollywood costume designers.

Vacca often collaborates with costume desginers to wardrobe lead actors and actresses in films such as The Inside Man (Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer), Stranger Than Fiction (Dustin Hoffman, Will Ferrell, Queen Latifah), August Rush (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), American Gangster (Denzel Washington), The Kite Runner (Shaun Toub), The Accidental Husband (Colin Firth), Chilled in Miami (Rene Zellweger), Nothing but the Truth (Angela Bassett) and TV series such as HBO Entourage (Jeremy Piven), Lipstick Jungle (Brooke Shields) and FX's newest drama Damages (Glenn Close).

Olori Collection 2010 Preview and Benefit for EDEYO Foundation

                             Hello,

Last Wednesday’s frigid weather did not keep loyal customers and supporters from a soiree that showcased the 2010 Olori Collection and benefited the EDEYO Foundation.  As we walk into Bacchus Wines we were greeted by Janice Torres, publicist and event coordinator; who made us feel warm and welcome with delectable selection of wine.  As we stood there amongst this unique collection of wines from around the world; our sight was stimulated with a wonderful symphony of patterns and colors showcased in the previous Olori designs.  I had the opportunity to speak with Adeleke Sijuwade; The Nigerian-born designer whose vision could only be described as a “Free-spirited, uncalculated, unplanned; yet harmonious”. As I spoke to “Leke”, as known to friends, I notice we have a lot of things in common.  The individuality of the pieces can be seen from their elaboration to the actual patterns that make up the textiles selected.  Like Leke I find that each piece definitely told a story. A story that shows a very confident woman as indicated by the use of shoulders details.  

Prominent throughout the collection, one shoulder necklines and the use of cording embellishments indicate that the designer creates a very sensual yet strong woman not afraid to hold her shoulders high. The use of this type of neckline allows her to also accessorize with opulence or with nothing at all. I asked the designer his motivation to pair up with the EDEYO Foundation; to which he said   “ ...groups or people that interested in changing things…from however things are..just the mere fact that  you wanted make change…I with anything like that.. if is something moving foward ”. Leke expressed that change needs to happen and that foundations like the EDEYO foundation are a perfect example of that.  Furthermore Leke feels that designers need to embrace charity and that “change” because it grows out of a basic human feeling of humanity.  As our nights continued we were introduced to Unik Ernest; Founder of the EDEYO Foundation and who I had the pleasure of becoming reacquainted.  Unik legendary event producer and philanthropist; known to me as co-owner of hotspot PM; spoke with me about the importance of the EDEYO Foundation and its role in education. Unik also expressed his views on the Dominican-Hatian relations and the importance of bridging our communication, cultural differences and common histories.

Tiger Woods: Truth, Sex, Power & Avoiding the Male Cliche

                       Hey There!

Tiger Woods is on the verge of becoming the first professional athlete to earn a billion dollars in winnings and endorsements. Woods is estimated to have earned approximately $750 million dollars since he began his professional career in 1996.  In 2008 alone he earned $110 million dollars.  As a multi-cultural athlete and the premiere player in the game of gentleman, his celebrity is certainly international making him a truly global sports icon.   He is married to the beautiful Elin Nordegren who had born him two children, Charlie born in February of this year and Sam born in 2007.  With so much on the line, the last thing Tiger Woods needs now is  to be "caught in a bad romance", stuck on the 19th hole.

One can only hope that the rumors are false that Tiger Woods is having an   affair with Nightclub Queen Rachel Uchitel, who has worked a VIP Hostess to the stars in Las Vegas, the Hamptons and Manhattan, and most recently at Griffin in the Meat Packing District.  In America, we are protective of our icons and heroes, and saddened to see them become just another cliche.  Click here for more

Offering more than 20 pockets each season from Leather dye cut, Dye pockets with gold star embroidery, and Leather vented pockets in an assortment of colors; Gridlock Denim guarantees that every woman can make use of their own creativity to design and appropriate distinctive style.   With its launch; the line is expected to be sold at exclusive retailers and boutiques around NY starting next spring.
