Oscar de la Renta, the doyen of American fashion, whose career began in the 1950s in Franco’s Spain and sprawled across the better living rooms of Paris and New York, and who was the last survivor of that generation of bold, all-seeing tastemakers, died on Monday at his home in Kent, Conn. He was 82. His death was confirmed by his wife, Annette de la Renta. Though ill with cancer intermittently for a decade, Mr. de la Renta was resilient. When former childhood star Raven-Symone, 28, who is sitting pretty following years of successful TV ventures agreed to appear on OWN and be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, fans were stoked. The interview, which aired the evening of Sunday, October 5th was a bit more of a personality "reveal" than anyone bargained for; it seems Symone made a few bombshell statements that lit up Twitter. One such statement was "I'm American, I'm not African-American, I'm American." This was a shock to many and somewhat of an outrage if not disappointment to many who do consider themselves African-Americans.

I said, I am not African-American. I never expected my personal beliefs and comments to spark such emotion in people.
