Hi!
The New York Times Center played host to the Supima Design Competition 2010. Six finalists, true creative talents, competed in a competiton that began in October 2009 with an open call at Bloomingdale's.*** Contestants were asked to create women's eveningwear pieces that capitalized on the softness, strength, and luster characteristic of Supima Cotton.
Following a brief cocktail reception attended by fellow designers such as Karen Sabag and Nary Manivong, as well as prominent fashion journalists and the like, the competition began. A runway show hosted by Media Personality Katrina Szish, and judged by the likes of noted Fashion Journalist Horacio Silva began with twin designers To-Tam and To-Nya Sachika of Sachika, who notably crafted a lovely "Butterfly" halter dress with removable butterfly sleeves constructed of KTSM and Vardham shirting. Other standouts included Gina Desilva's Trumpet-skirt gown with sleeveless cropped jacket featuring circular-cut ruffles in Kaihara denim and Heber Sanchez's cocktail-length gown with asymetric, draped side train, executed in Orient Craft ribbed knit.
The Supima Design Competition required each designer to rethink familiar fabric constructions: the lustrous wovens customarily used as high-end shirting; the fine jersey that goes into luxury tops and lingerie; the sturdy denim and corduroys that make up premium jeans and sportswear.
The Results? Designer Gina Desilva taking the win for Best Eveningwear, and Designer Robin Thomas for Best T-Shirt. Award winners were announced by Super Model Coca Rocha.
***-Bloomingdale's will feature the winning T-shirt design alongside the Supima Collection of luxury basics.
