Hey There!
An evening to celebrate established and emerging artists--In/Out: An exhibition and auction featuring GLAAD's Top 100 Artists was a relaxing end to the weekend. Out Auction 09 took place on Sunday November 15th at the Metropolitan Pavilion and this year, honored renown artist Ross Bleckner. The event supported by an honorary host committee*** of outstanding art patrons, actors, models and the like provided attendees with access to valued works by some of the leading artists of the 20th Century, including painters such as Kandinsky and Miro as well photographers Herb Ritts and Stephen Klein.
The early part of the evening allowed for perusal and bidding on various works--GQ Advertising Director Brendan Monaghan bid on two pieces early on. Others like Brad Boles, Jill Zarin's famed gay husband from The Real Housewives of New York, simply admired the works on display over cocktails or beer courtesy of sponsor BudLight. An installation by Ryan Turley entitled Frivolous (mixed media, 9,000 yards of curling ribbon in plastic tubes) done in the colors of the gay pride flag was a standout. Other works ranged from thought provoking contemporary pieces to risque images such as Michael Kirwan's Something Different (watercolor marker on paper).
As the evening progressed awards**** would soon follow. GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios addressed the crowds initially, followed by revered stage actor Joel Grey, who then introduced renown artist Ross Bleckner who addressed the crowds reminding us of GLAAD'S undying efforts and the results that come from their work. Mr. Bleckner cited, "advocacy and tolerance of homosexual artists of all disciplines have always been a conscience and pioneers of our cultural lives through images and words. That's why the work of GLAAD is so important and that's why I'm here".
Following awards and speeches, the live auction soon began. In all, OutAuction 09 offered a very full evening of both art and advocacy further enhanced by a tremendous outpouring of support.
