Hi!
The Park Avenue Armory was the setting for Elin and Michael Nirenberg's 12th Annual Collaboration for a Cure.*** The evening which benefits the Samuel Waxman Research Foundation was a large scale undertaking done with elegance and flair. A cocktail reception, dinner, live auction, and a sensational performance by Grammy-Award Wining Singer/Song Writer Steve Winwood awaited guests. The carpet was graced by Victoria’s Secret Angels Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel, Actress Patti D’Arbanville, and Susan Meisel.
Once inside, hundreds of guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, and amidst the looming crowds we were introduced to Dr. Samuel Waxman, the namesake of the beneficiary foundation, and we ceased the moment to inquire about his hopes for 2010 in regards to continued cancer research. "Well you know cancer research is a continuum" he shared, so the first is to increase the quality of the research we do through three goals: the first goal is to use our focus to eradicate the cancer stem cell, the second is to eradicate the cancer dormant cell that causes the recurrence in people later on after you think they're cured, and the third is to develop some of the compounds that we've identified to do this and try to make them into drugs. So, if we can make the rest of those goals, it will be a great success in 2010."
The evening continued with dinner and a live auction with such high-ticket items as a private luxury yacht cruise in the Caribbean that received a bid of $95,000, a St. Barts getaway which went for $85,000, and a private dinner and wine tasting in Italian Wine Merchants’ signature event space Studio del Gusto, which sold twice at a winning bid of $30,000 each. We were particularly interested in the silent auction items of Hamlet tickets for the December 4th show--the play's FINALE, and the package Bye Bye Birdie Hello John Stamos, consisting of four tickets to Broadway Show Bye Bye Birdie, and a meet and greet with John Stamos.
The night culminated with a live performance by Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Steve Winwood and an after-party concert by The Lost Trailers.
***-The cause is touted as addressing one of the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancer, even offering hope for preventing cancer from developing.
