Wow! it's that time again--New York's Upfront Week. Talk about industry jargon, what exactly does that mean? We answered this a few years ago BUT why digress..simply put the upfronts mean there are more celebs and TV execs are in town than ...say a FEW WEEKS ago. Why are the celebs here? we are so not completely clear on this, but we do know it means daily visits to gifting suites, photo opps at primo events...and...well,um...what MORE IS THERE?

Being a rather hair obsessed guy; it took me years to find the best stylist and colorist. So it’s no shock that I find myself in the coveted chairs of the Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon. I have completely trusted my tresses to colorist Marko (for the most fine and natural highlights that can transform me into a golden glowing goddess in a mere 3 hours at the dawn of spring) and Judy who knows how to cut just right, so my hair does that signature flip thing in the back (not to name drop, but Judy has won an Emmy for hair styling for The View).
I’m overjoyed to report that Sally herself has launched, what I consider to be, the MOST AMAZING haircare line at beyond affordable prices. Ring the alarm for Sally Hershberger “Shag Spray” – I stumbled upon this in the aisles of Walgreens when I was supposed to be at the gym (product junkies tend to run off course). On Sunday May 4th just as the day was drawing to a close The Quest for "it" headed out to one of the more enlightening artist exhibitions we'd seen in awhile. Located in the famous Sugar Hill section of Harlem was the Home Base Gallery--the current epicenter of the Home Base Project; the evening, a celebratory, was proudly presented by Fame Game, Guest Of A Guest, and Priority Films. Entry to the 5 story multi-unit brownstone gave way to floor upon floor of artistic expression primarily comprised of paintings, mixed media and installations. The initial floor held a warm reception of refreshments personally attended by Fame Game CEO Jennifer Novak, and several others from the Fame Game family, Rachelle Hruska Founder of GuestofaGuest.com, and intermittent art fans.
The historic brownstone was a perfect showcase for the works of 17 artists***, however, upon reaching the 5th and final floor, a standout caught our eye--Sylvie Degiez's and Wayne Lopes' Sound Installation (see photo at left). A group of 6 CD units (5 in the main room and 1 in a bathroom) play piano tones in unison--each with the same type-written info taped to its top: A world where everything proceeds from the subdivision of a unit. Understanding vibration offers us the possibility of music and allow us to anticipate time sequences. Astronomers hear a Bb in the center of our galaxy. The axis of our planet wobble around F# its yearly cycle around the sun like a C#. Those tones are present like structural angles and ever changing music. If all the CDs being set on repeat play continuously for 1 year the mix will never repeat. Press 1 for track repeat, press twice for all tracks repeat, press for play or pause, press for stop.
Inspiring? We'd say! The exhibit runs Wednesday through Sunday through May 18th, don't miss this one!

On Saturday, May 10th Socialite Tracy Stern of Salon Tea fame along with Melissa Foss, Pooneh Mohazzabi, Elizabeth Reid, Susan Shin, Mona Wyatt held a soiree to end all soiree's--Saturday Night White Disco Fever Party. A disco themed 'White' party, in the tradition of many a color themed events, was held at Ms. Stern's tony Upper Eastside apartment for a number of their most distinguished friends. Amidst the 70's and 80's disco, and underneath a giant disco-ball was non-stop dancing in between nibbles of notably marshmallows, vanilla cupcakes and powdered donuts etc. Chai tea cocktails courtesy of NAVAN Natural Liqueur flowed, as the evening was enjoyed by guests that included: Violetta Bitiei, Allison Goldenstein, Stepahnie Chassing, Douglas Marshall, Nick Dietz, Fashion Journalist Syl Tang, Publicist Laura Rubin, and many, many more. When the now sold out April 28th Gossip Girl issue of New York Magazine hit newsstands --the title Best Show Ever -- emblazoned on its cover -- the 7 cast members clothed in white, peering at the reader as if they knew them -- cast member Nicole Fiscella (who wasn't among them) remained un-phased. The exotically captivating model/actress, the product of a West Indian mother by way of St. Lucia and a Guyanese Indian father, was destined for something greater--the April cover of The Quest for "it" Feature Story. An EXCLUSIVE with Gossip Girl's Nicole Fiscella is one we could not afford to pass up, for her talent and her beauty far transcends her current role.
How'd You Land That?
Shooting the breeze with actress Nicole Fiscella on a clear and crisp Saturday afternoon in Manhattan's financial district was a true delight. The early 20 something starlet is not at all affected by the trappings of being on one of the country's number 1 TV dramas. The burning question for us was...how did she land such a primo role? Upon graduating college most young women transition from student to working girl--working girl for Nicole Fiscella meant modeling. After graduating from Boston's Tufts University "I started working at bars and clubs to make ends meet. I tried the modeling thing like 3 or 4 years ago and I've always had a TV agent to do TV commercials. I was told you should really try acting. I was like I don't want to do it, I don't want to learn lines, I'm not interested at all. When the role for Gossip Girl came up, they were like... just try it."
So then what? Well, it's fairly obvious, she took the role!
"I wasn't expecting anything to happen, but they called me back and I took the role; it was totally random...I guess you could say I've been bitten by the acting bug." When asked how she felt about being a person of color on TV she shared "there are definitely positives and negatives--I think that this industry is pretty much like any other industry... if you are a minority you are going to feel it--that's just the way that is. There are less roles for black actresses acting, just like there are less black people working in finance etc.; I think it goes along with the rest of the world. I love the fact that I've gotten the opportunity to be on the show, essentially in the books (series) the part that I play is not a minority...I think everything's going in the right direction."
What She Really Really Wants...
Not one to take herself too seriously, Nicole Fiscella not surprisingly has a very meaningful commitment going on in her life right now. Unlike many young actresses whose commitment may be to the latest heartthrob, often times their hunky co-stars, Ms. Fiscella's commitment leans more toward the academic side of life. That's right, our Gossip Girl fave is currently finishing up a Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport Connecticut--one of the better programs in the country offering classes online in the major . On the advice of a friend who observed her obsessive interest in food and health, she decided to hone in on nutrition after tinkering with computer's and web design. The fact that both of her parents are doctors certainly didn't hurt in the decision making process to do something health related, and besides this aspect of it was fun.
The More Things Change
Who would have thought when we first met up with celeb Nicole Fiscella while hosting an event at the hip shoe atelier Te Casan (September 2007) that we would be getting this up close and personal? We knew she was special when we spoke with her that evening alongside good friend Sasha Berlin (see photo at left), but we had no idea how in demand she really is. Shortly, before this interview we spotted her at Chelsea's Star Lounge for OK Magazine's Bachelor issue, smiling pretty for the camera with Steel Petal Media's Consuela Nance (see photo above)--clearly our girl gets around. We asked if her life has truly changed since Gossip Girl ..."I go to a lot more events, and have to manage my time a lot better. I've lived in New York for 8 years now, so I've had my friends here forever that I've spent all of my time with and then I've got all these new friends from the cast...so my group of friends went from like 6 people to 30...its CRAZY... its fun, but its crazy...there's a LOT of people around all the time."
Professionally, Nicole Fiscella is right on track, with dual interests in both nutrition and acting. She is expected to finish up her studies sometime next year, and is looking to eventually "set up my own schedule, have a client at 3 o'clock and go to work at 5 o' clock." Additionally she hopes to complete a book with her mom, and another book solely authored by herself. "Those are things you can do...as the one thing about working on sets is there's a lot of downtime...in hair and makeup you can do things. When asked if she had any preference toward film or stage or television she opts for TV. " I really like TV... continuing in TV shows sound good to me." I'm open for everything!

New York based charity organization Designers for Darfur, has found itself attempting to play peacemaker between the powerhouse Louis Vuitton Paris and one of Designers for Darfur's participating artists, Nadia Plesner of the Netherlands.
The Paris based fashion house Louis Vuitton has filed a lawsuit against a 26 year old student artist Nadia Plesner for selling posters and t-shirts of a Darfur victim holding a designer bag inspired by a Louis Vuitton-like design. 100% of all profits have been going to charity (Divest Darfur), but Louis Vuitton is still demanding massive damages. For her 'Simple Living' campaign, [artist] Nadia Plesner decided to dress-up a Darfur victim with a Louis Vuitton-inspired bag, and a Paris Hilton-style accessory dog. Louis Vuitton, however, was not amused by Nadia’s creative expression, and filed a lawsuit where they are claiming over $20,000 a day if she continues with the project.
We've been told that Charity Founder and Fashion Designer Malcolm Harris has been asked to intervene; he respectfully declined opting to encourage Louis Vuitton to use their voice and much needed support to end the atrocities taking place in Darfur (citing Madonna & Gucci's union) rather than wage war against Ms. Plesner. Due to Louis Vuitton's actions, Ms. Plesner's website has now been forced to start a legal fund to raise monies to fight the power house attorneys.
Clearly this situation is FAR from over...stay tuned....
